A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Perform Umrah
Undertaking the sacred pilgrimage of Umrah is a profoundly meaningful spiritual journey. Whether it is your initial visit or you require a structured review of the prescribed rites according to the Sunnah, this guide outlines every fundamental phase of the pilgrimage clearly.
The 4 Foundational Pillars of Umrah
The performance of Umrah rests upon four primary rites:
- Ihram: Entering the sacred state of consecration prior to or at the assigned Miqat border.
- Tawaf: Performing seven counter-clockwise circumambulations around the Holy Kaaba.
- Sa’i: Traversing seven circuits between the hills of Mount Safa and Mount Marwa.
- Halq or Taqsir: Shaving or trimming the hair to conclude the rites and exit the consecrated state.
Step 1: Preparation & Travel Foundations
Proper preparation begins well before departure:
- Spiritual Cleansing: Seek forgiveness, settle personal obligations and debts, and confirm that travel funds are strictly Halal.
- Physical Preparation: Because completing Tawaf and Sa’i requires notable walking endurance (typically exceeding five kilometers), engaging in 30-minute daily walks two to three weeks beforehand helps build fitness.
- Packing Necessities: Pack two seamless white unstitched sheets for men, modest attire for women, comfortable footwear leaving ankles clear, and completely fragrance-free hygiene items.
Step 2: Entering Ihram, the Miqat & the Talbiyah
Ihram represents both your outward dress and your inner spiritual condition.
Perform ritual washing (Ghusl), trim your nails, and wear the Ihram garments prior to crossing the designated Miqat perimeter. Offer two Rak’ahs of voluntary prayer, declare your formal intention, and articulate the Talbiyah:
Restrictions during Ihram: Once consecrated, pilgrims must avoid perfumed substances, clipping nails, cutting hair, covering the head or wearing tailored garments (for men), wearing face veils or gloves (for women), and engaging in arguments or marital intimacy.
Step 3: Entering the Sanctuary, Tawaf & Zamzam
Enter Masjid Al-Haram leading with your right foot while offering supplication for divine mercy. Upon viewing the Kaaba, pause and raise your hands in prayer. Cease reciting the Talbiyah as circumambulation begins.
Circumambulation Rules
- Idtiba' (Men): Bare your right shoulder by running the upper garment under your right arm and over your left shoulder.
- The Starting Line: Begin in line with the green marker at the Black Stone, raising your right hand to proclaim "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar".
- Seven Rounds: Move anti-clockwise keeping the Kaaba on your left. Men should walk with a brisk pace during the first three circuits.
- Yemeni Corner to the Black Stone: Between these two points, recite:
Upon completing seven rounds, recover your right shoulder, offer two Rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim, and drink your fill of blessed Zamzam water.
Step 4: Sa’i (Safa and Marwa)
Sa'i honours the devotion of Lady Hajar searching for sustenance for her child.
- Ascend Mount Safa, orient yourself toward the Kaaba, and praise Allah.
- Proceed toward Mount Marwa to finish lap one. Men jog lightly between the designated green markers, while women proceed at standard walking pace.
- Ascend Marwa and repeat your supplications.
- Continue until seven total laps are fulfilled, finishing at Mount Marwa.
Step 5: Concluding the Umrah (Halq / Taqsir)
To conclude your pilgrimage and release all Ihram boundaries, your hair must be cut:
- Men: Complete shaving of the head (Halq) carries the greatest merit, or hair may be trimmed evenly across the entire head (Taqsir) using licensed facilities.
- Women: Shaving is impermissible. Women cut roughly a single fingertip length (~1–2 cm) from the ends of their hair in private.
With this final step fulfilled, your Umrah is complete, and regular garments may be resumed. Many pilgrims complete their travels with a visit to the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah and pray two Rak’ahs in Masjid Quba.
